For no particular reason, I felt like writing a post on my so called 'blog' today. It's been 5 months since I posted anything, something which I had planned on doing everyday. Yep.
Recently, I was going through the comments section on a funny YouTube video. While the video didn't elicit so much as even a smile from me, turns out other people were LMAOOOOing at it. And this is always the case. Everyone seems to get so easily impressed with stuff and find it oh so hilarious, but most of the times I'm more like mehhhhh.
No don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't find stuff funny or lack a sense of humour. Au contraire, I am obsessed with humour and comdey. I can spend my life just watching funny shows.
If something makes me laugh, I admire the people behind it to the point of being obsessed with them. I rave about it to any interested party and laugh over the jokes over and over (yeah I get that this is irritating too).If people ask me what my hobbies are, I always want to say it's stalking funny people on the web, but I realise this is not an acceptable answer.
This passion for comedy and devotion to finding great content also makes me a harsh critic. If I feel that the creators have been lazy with their jokes and done a shoddy job, there is no way in hell I'm going to laugh along or praise it even when other people are going crazy over it. In fact, I start resenting them.
Maybe it's cause I feel that I have a much more evolved taste in comedy or maybe it's cause I'm being a bitch, but I simply do not like un-funny people getting credit for being "OMG LOLZ" just cause there is a lack of good content out there.
In India, especially, comedy as a form of entertainment hardly existed. And if it did , it was in the form of cheap thrills with even cheaper background sounds, the universally tested with guaranteed lolz -'cross-dressing' or the Johny Lever brand of comedy (in no way undermining his talent, he is hilarious!). People or jokes that were initially funny, were done to death after a point. Placing that 'token goofball' in every freaking bolly flick was seen as a tried and tested formula to add the required level of humour to the movie...smh.
What I'm trying to say is that intelligent comedy was unheard of. Even if there were some amazing people out there doing it, they hardly got any recognition. So for decades, India has been starved of good unadulterated comedy. We've simply been settling for trash that's been passed off as comedy for generations.
With the advent of YouTube, a lot has changed. And really, there are people coming up with brilliant things. The downside to this however is that, Indians who have been denied good humour all this while, are easy to please. They will laugh at anything and everything. This is an injustice to both parties. The creators do not try as hard as they should to come up with better content, and the audience does not get to enjoy the kind of comedy these people are capable of doing.
Basically India, we need to really up our game.
So to cut my longggg rant short-be pricey, people! Play hard to get! Just like in the movies, the guy tries harder if the girl is unimpressed, you need to demand better content and not be satisfied with the semi-funny stuff we are being bombarded it. You'll feel the change, trust me.
An yes you are free to call me, "bitch acting like she knows it all"
Until next time,
F
